This article in the Mercury News really makes my blood boil. Apparently the city of San Jose thinks that the entire country ought to chip in and fill the city's budget gap to the tune of $1 billion dollars. Yep, that's right, a billion dollars. Here's the money quote:
"We want to make sure we get our share," Mayor Chuck Reed said.
This rankles for a couple of reasons. First, why the heck should folks in Maine be paying for a new park near the old Del Monte cannery site? That's just abusive, pork barrel politics. Second, when is the city (and the rest of the country, for that matter) going to grow up and take responsibility for its actions? Every time they overspend are they going to run to Uncle Sam to bail them out? What happened to responsible government?
