Yep, sad but true. I upgraded to iTunes 8 the day it came out because I wanted the updated iPhone software that was released at about the same time. After I did so I could no longer connect to the speakers attached to my Apple TV. I'd get an error message with the error code -15000 any time I tried to play music through the remote speakers (a feature called AirTunes).
Trawling through Apple's support forums yielded a lot of similar complaints and a few voodoo prescriptions: turn IPv6 on, or off, or add a firewall exception for UDP traffic bound for iTunes. None of these remedies worked for me, but I did notice that several of my fellow mutes also have AT&T's U-verse service and are using the 2WIRE wireless gateways that come with the U-verse Internet service.
So, on a hunch I setup my old AirPort Extreme wireless router, transitioned my Mac mini and Apple TV over to the Extreme's wireless network, et voilà! AirTunes worked again.
So, clearly there's something about iTunes 8 that doesn't like the 2WIRE gateways (or vice versa)—which really stinks for folks not lucky enough to have an extra wireless router handy.
