The New York Sun has an article on the tension between using food crops to feed people versus using those same crops to produce ethanol:
One factor being blamed for the price hikes is the use of government subsidies to promote the use of corn for ethanol production. An estimated 30% of America’s corn crop now goes to fuel, not food. [...] A study by a Washington think tank, the International Food Policy Research Institute, indicated that between a quarter and a third of the recent hike in commodities prices is attributable to biofuels.
So let me get this straight: My tax dollars are being spent to promote the use of food crops for fuel instead of food or feed, which results in me paying more for both my food and my fuel? Sounds like typical government efficiency to me.
