Wow, that was quick! Skype just announced the pricing for their SkypeOut service, which lets you use Skype to call regular telephones or mobiles. For those devices located in the US and Canada you pay a flat fee of $14.95 for one year. That's right—less than $1.25 a month for unlimited local and long distance (US and Canada) calling.
Note that this is a promotional price, and that the price will rise to $29.95 at the end of January 2007.
If you want to make calls to phones outside the US and Canada it'll cost 2.1¢ per minute or more, depending on where you're calling and what kind of phone it is.
This is outstanding pricing, and frankly better than what I had hoped for. So, I went ahead and bought a SkypeIn phone number for a year ($38) as well as the SkypeOut service. For less than $53 I have all my home calling needs paid for for an entire year. In fact, I may even look at significantly cutting my mobile phone plan.
Way to go, Skype!
